Knox v St. Josephs, 24 May 1997 — Andrew Campbell in the lineout, weeks before he passed away

The story of Andrew “Big Dog” Campbell

Andrew "Big Dog" Campbell lost his life playing the game he loved, rugby. He was 18 years old.

This photo was taken on Saturday 24 May 1997, Knox against St Joseph's. It is the last photo of Andrew playing rugby. On 19 July 1997, Andrew passed away on the field, in front of his family and friends, playing 1st XV for Knox.

Big Dog Wine was founded by his brother Dave Campbell and close mate Steve Barretto to honour Andrew's legacy and give back to the rugby community that meant everything to him.

Andrew grew up in Newcastle and boarded at Knox Grammar. Back home, Big Dog was the character on the Newcastle TV show that came on at 7:30 each night to send kids to bed. Andrew went to bed at 7:30 every night, and the boys at boarding school started calling him Big Dog because of it.

Where the name came from.

In 2025, Knox Grammar's graduating class arranged a mural at the school in Andrew's honour as their parting gift. Not one of those students was alive when Andrew passed away. And yet the story mattered enough to act on. That's the weight it carries.
